The February 12, 2010 meeting was called to order at 12:05 by president John Randall. 7 people were present including 5 ASSE members. An excellent presentation was given by Al Perkins from the Iowa – Illinois Safety Council about Belt America and safe driving. The next meeting is March 12, 2010 at the Cedar Falls Holiday Inn. 15 people were in attendance, 9 are ASSE members Kevan Bakewell gave a power point presentation on the history of Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids, Safety Program at Quaker and finally an overview of safety and environmental health during the flood recovery of 2008. Many questions were asked during and after the presentation. Kirk Dighton gave an overview of the operations of Clipper Turbine Works which was followed by a tour of the Clipper operations.
Meeting adjourned 1:15 p.m. The September 2009 meeting of the NE Iowa ASSE chapter was called to order at 11:50 a.m. by Treasurer Wendel Reece. 5 people were in attendance, 4 are ASSE members Old business: None Thanks to Rex Butler of Central Iowa Power Companies for sponsoring this month’s meeting Jim Jegerlehner, President of Principal Ergonomics, gave an excellent presentation on using ergonomics to make a difference. Jim had numerous before/after pictures to demonstrate the ergonomic principles he was discussing.
Meeting adjourned 1:20 p.m. The May 2009 meeting of the NE Iowa ASSE chapter was called to order at 11:35 a.m. by Secretary Brad Sayre. 15 people were in attendance, 9 are ASSE members Old business: None Mike Whitmore from IOSHA gave an update on OSHA activities. There was a lot of good discussions from those in attendance. Future meetings: This is our last meeting until September. Enjoy a safe and prosperous summer. No nominations from the floor. Voting will be April 10. New business: Discussion on residential sprinkler standard. Discussion from some members that the chapter and members have been their source and “go – to” area for safety advice and being able to get questions answered. The chapter has also been a source for employment positions recently for one or two members. Spoke very highly of the newsletter – thank you Wendel for a job well done, it is appreciated. Spoke very highly about the value of small chapters that are active and meet on a dedicated, scheduled basis to tour businesses and have speakers about various topics. Future meetings:
Paul Cheng, Senior Ergonomics Engineer, John Deere Waterloo Works gave an excellent presentation and explanation of the virtual ergonomics theatre at John Deere. He explained how this technology helps reduce potential ergonomic exposures. We will see everyone next month in Cedar Rapids. Old business: Steve Grimm reported that the NE Iowa Chapter has been assured a booth space at the Iowa Illinois Safety Council PDC and most recently the Governor’s Safety Council in Des Moines. New business: Good discussion regarding partnering with other organizations, including other organizations on mailings/newsletters. The goal is to work together, network, share information and to obtain more options for meetings and tours. February meeting – Ergonomics at Rockwell March meeting – Virtual Ergonomics Lab, John Deere Waterloo April meeting – Gary Higbee, Andy will check to see if Quad Cities Chapter would like to do a joint meeting May meeting – Mike Whitmore, OSHA Workforce Development, OSHA update with Q and A 11 people were in attendance, 10 are ASSE members Following the meeting a tour of the Grout Museum and the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum took place. The safety precautions that were implemented during the recent 2 year building expansion were highlighted. Issues faced were usual construction safety plus asbestos removal, sprinkler installation, emergency lighting, etc. Note: anyone traveling through Waterloo or NE Iowa should take the time to visit this facility. It is truly amazing what this facility has to offer! Thanks to Steve Grimm for donating the pizza and drink! We will see everyone next month in Cedar Rapids. Joel Althoff gave a presentation on ITS which is a company devoted to helping businesses prepare for disasters and technologies available for protecting data. Stephanie Mondry introduced Dan O’Malley, Lead Physical Therapist, Kimball Ridge Center Sports Injury Center, who spoke on current practices of back injury diagnosis and treatment. Information was excellent and many questions followed. Door prizes donated by Stephanie Mondry were awarded. Meeting adjourned 12:45 p.m. We met at the Cedar River Paper Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for our April 2008 meeting. Our host was Ken Matveia. Mr. Matveia spoke on the VPP and VPPPA programs, of which Cedar River Paper is one of 11 in Iowa and one of 2100 across the United States. He also included historical facts about his company. We were provided with lunch and had our monthly business meeting during this time. President Sayre addressed the request from National to raise dues which was not favorably accepted. We then brought forth the members for officers as required before our next election. President Sayre will be running for secretary instead of incumbent Grimm. Otherwise the slate remains the same as our last publication. We had 17 people at this meeting of which 8 are member in good standing. Cindy Baldwin addressed the membership with news from AIHA and invited us to share info and meeting dates. Following the lunch we were given a tour of the facility and shown how paper is recycled into cardboard papers for various customers needs. This facility makes both the inner and outer papers on two different lines. We started at 11:43 for our business meeting and adjourned for the tour at 12:28. Our next meeting will be in Cedar Falls at 11:30 at The Holiday Inn and be about OSHA updates. We will also be holding our elections for next years officers. Cindy Baldwin, Senior Industrial Hygienist, Terracon Consulting gave a presentation on Respiratory Protection. The chapter will take the summer off and will reconvene Friday, September 14, 2007. The board will meet Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Cedar Falls Bonanza restaurant to determine topics for upcoming meetings. The meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m. by President Mike Perry. Jack Kester, Ergonomics Consultant gave a presentation on Integrating Ergonomics Into Your Lean Manufacturing Process. The chapter will again this year have a booth at the Iowa Illinois Safety Council Professional Development Conference. Members are encouraged to help staff the booth. The Northeast Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers met January 12, 2007 with 8 people in attendance. 7 were members of ASSE. The meeting was called to order at 12:00 noon by past President Steve Grimm in the President’s and Vice President’s absence. John Hammer, industrial eyewear sales consultant gave an excellent presentation on occupational vision care – the difference between a prescription safety eyeglass program and occupational vision care. The next meeting will be February 9, 2007 at A. Y. McDonald Manufacturing Company in Dubuque. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
The November 2006 meeting of the ASSE North East Iowa Chapter was held Friday, November 10 in Dubuque at John Deere Dubuque Works. The meeting was called to order by President Mike Perry at 12:05 with 19 people in attendance of which 10 were members. A reminder was made and encouragement to attend the December 8 meeting in Cedar Rapids where Gary Higbee will be speaking on Safety Climate and Safety Culture. Treasurer Wendel Reece reported the current bank balance is $4,095.19. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Steve De Boever – Safety Manager. Having no further business the meeting was adjourned at 12:15 Immediately following the meeting, Steve De Boever presented a brief history of John Deere and what is produced at the Dubuque operations.
